Nikon’s highest resolution DX camera now has an all-purpose partner: the useful yet compact telephoto 18-140mm. In order to keep the D7100 kit low-cost, Nikon still supply the body with the regular AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR. However, for those looking for a better quality and further-reaching option, the 18-140mm is just the ticket.
In recent months since the release of the D7100, which boasts a 24mp sensor, full HD video and an AF system the likes of the professional D800 and D4, it became apparent that not all existing DX lenses were quite up to the quality of this new body.
In particular the AF-S 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and the one-for-all AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR, while being perfectly good lenses and still fit for the job on most DX cameras, were just not meeting the requirements of a 24mp sensor. Nikon’s answer to this was firstly to produce the new AF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR DX – an immensely powerful but slightly heavy lens, and finally the small yet versatile 18-140mm, which works quite nicely as a general purpose zoom covering most landscapes, portrait, street/reportage and medium telephoto work.
At only 490 grams, it is also lighter than many of the alternatives and won’t weigh down your kit bag.
