The Nikon Owner South-Coast Photographic Walkabout
Through the Historic Village of Eling and Surroundings
Saturday, 22nd June 2013

For the first summer ‘walkabout’ of the very popular Nikon Owner South-Coast Group, Andrew Hewson and Adrian Cochrane, the organisers of the group, have kindly arranged a photo-outing to the historic village of Eling and its outskirts. Eling is situated not far from Southampton on the eastern edge of the New Forest and bordered by the River Test. Due to its proximity to the New Forest, the area’s history and pre-history is connected to a large degree to the timber trade and early boat and ship-building. Eling’s particular points of interest include a working tide mill at one end of the harbour, a Norman church with parish registers dating back to 1537 and a medieval toll bridge which has been in use since at least 1418.

Time to meet:

Just after 2:30 p.m. (Trains are scheduled from both London and Weymouth at 2:35 p.m..)

Where to meet:

Totton Railway Station,
Station Road North, Totton,
Southampton. SO40 3AB

After meeting at Totton Railway Station just after 2:30 p.m., Andrew and Adrian will accompany the group to the Eling Tide Mill (the “A” marker on the map below) on a two-mile riverside walk with its local bird life and wildlife, finishing opposite the Mill at the Eling Heritage Centre. For anyone who would like to continue into the evening, an early meal at one of the local pubs has been arranged, after which everyone can make their way to the edge of Southampton Water for some spectacular dusk/night photography, looking towards the view of the lights of the container terminal at the Southampton side of the water.
